My Timeform: Spanish City has the heart of a León

ArticleImage

Nick Seddon picks out three eye-catching runners from Ascot on Saturday, including two from the highly competitive Victoria Cup.

Gilgamesh (Timeform rating 104p) Ascot, Saturday 12th May

Gilgamesh has carried the profile of a progressive sort for quite some time, completing a four-timer as a three-year-old at Redcar with a bit in hand around this time last year. We have only seen him three times since, and he looked badly in need of the run when racing too freely at Newbury on reappearance last month, but Saturday’s run was much more encouraging, finishing a close-up seventh, a performance that deserves extra credit considering that he finished best of those that raced in the smaller near-side group. He remains open to further improvement, appealing as the type who can be a contender in all the top handicaps over a mile later on this season, and is one to keep an eye on in the coming weeks; he would be a player in the Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot if getting in. George Scott

Spanish City (Timeform rating 99p) Ascot, Saturday 12th May

Spanish City presumably hasn’t been the easiest to train, considering how lightly raced he is for his age. However, he put in a career-best effort when making a winning reappearance at Newcastle a fortnight ago, justifying strong market support to score readily and giving the impression that he could make an impact in some of the top handicaps this season.  He was unlucky not to finish closer in the Victoria Cup, too, held up and travelling well before running on late, nearest the finish. Spanish City remains unexposed and, given his relative inexperience, it was encouraging that the hustle and bustle of a big-field handicap didn’t deter him. With more progress expected, he is fancied to pick up a good handicap this season. Roger Varian

Sing Out Loud (Timeform rating 85p) Ascot, Saturday 12th May

Sing Out Loud is a likeable sort who generally runs his race, and proved to be a fairly useful two-year-old last term, picking up minor contests at Brighton and Lingfield and placing in four of his five starts. He shaped after six months off on Saturday, finishing a close-up seventh in a typically competitive three-year-old handicap, and deserved extra credit considering that he was poorly placed as the race went, situated on the stands side when the action unfolded more towards the centre. Sent off the 50/1 outsider, he still had plenty to do two furlongs out, and stayed on well towards the near-side, finishing with plenty of running left. He seems sure to improve further this season, appeals as being on a fair mark, and is well worth following. Gary Moore
