My Timeform: Phoenix looks a hot prospect

Nick Seddon picks out three eye-catchers from the last week of racing, including two from the Summer Festival at Sandown.

Phoenix of Spain (Timeform rating 80p) Sandown, Friday 6 July

Whilst Phoenix of Spain was sent off at a double figure price for his debut at Sandown on Friday, he made plenty of appeal on paper (he is a half-brother to several winners, including the smart performer Central Square), and caught the eye back in fourth position under considerate handling from Jamie Spencer, in need of the experience and making good progress in the latter stages of the race. This could prove to be a useful novice contest, with the winner looking sure to go on to bigger and better things, and Phoenix of Spain is one to track this term in similar events to this. Charles Hills

Bajan Gold (Timeform rating 90p) Sandown, Saturday 7 July

Bajan Gold was very much a work in progress in his six starts as a two-year-old last term, giving the impression that things would click into place as his stamina was more drawn out. That eureka moment duly followed on his second and third starts back, when stepped up to 1m2f, completing a quickfire double at Windsor and Lingfield in the space of five days, with the second coming under a 5 lb penalty.  The form of those wins has worked out well, and Bajan Gold ran with credit to finish third on his most recent start at Sandown on Saturday, again at this trip, giving the impression that he was ready for further, outpaced two furlongs out but keeping on well in the closing stages. He will be suited by a mile and a half, and is one to keep on side with more progress likely. Stuart Williams

Atty Persse (Timeform rating 109+) Haydock, Saturday 7 July

We hadn’t seen Atty Persse for 11 months prior to last Saturday’s Old Newton Cup, but he had looked like a Group horse in the making for the majority of the early stages of his career last season, before struggling when given the opportunity in that sphere on his final two starts. As such, he headed to Haydock as one of the least exposed types in the field, and he shaped well in a first time tongue-strap, finishing third and likely to have got closer if he hadn’t have been intimidated by the hanging Teodoro inside the final furlong, eventually beaten by just under three lengths. The son of Frankel has no future engagements quite yet, but he is full of stamina (he is a half-brother to a useful performer who stayed two miles) and is one to keep an eye on. Roger Charlton
