My Timeform: O'Brien filly a winner waiting to Happen

We pick out three eye-catching runners from recent meetings, including a rapidly improving filly from Ballydoyle.

Danny Ocean (Timeform Flat rating: 63p) Leicester, Friday 5th April

The Brocklesby Stakes third Zulu Zander faced nine unraced rivals in the novice stakes at Leicester and he made the most of that experience to land the odds without too much fuss. It was lack of experience that held back Danny Ocean in the early stages of the race, soon off the bridle, but he showed clear signs of ability at the business end, making headway over a furlong out and finishing well to take third, five and a half lengths behind the winner. A £42,000 yearling by Dandy Man, Danny Ocean is a speedily-bred colt, his dam an unraced half-sister to Instalment who had useful form at two. An entry in the Weatherbys Super Sprint is an encouraging sign, and Danny Ocean looks sure to progress from his debut. Karl Burke

Happen (Timeform Flat rating: 100p) Leopardstown, Saturday 6th April

Aidan O’Brien ran no fewer than five fillies in Leopardstown’s 1000 Guineas Trial while son Joseph fielded another three, including the Fillies’ Mile winner Iridessa. None of those were able to trouble last year’s Moyglare Stud Stakes runner-up Lady Kaya, but the 16/1-shot Happen fared best of the rest in pipping Iridessa for second, with the apparent Ballydoyle first string, Zagitova, only fourth under Ryan Moore. While the winner made the running, Happen shaped very well as the only of those held up who managed to land any sort of blow. Racing well off the pace, she had to pick her way through under Seamie Heffernan before staying on to be beaten just over two lengths behind Lady Kaya, with Iridessa a head back in third. Splitting a pair of fillies with Group 1 form represented another big step forward for Happen who was just as progressive in her three starts last year, the last of those a narrow course-and-distance victory in a maiden. As a daughter of War Front, the rangy Happen is bred to be well suited by the step up to a mile, and probably further still in time as her Oaks-winning dam Alexandrova has also produced the smart filly Somehow who did all her winning at beyond a mile. Happen will do well to emulate Guineas winner Winter who was herself runner-up for Ballydoyle in this contest two years ago, but she’s clearly moving fast up the pecking-order at Ballydoyle. Aidan O’Brien

Cilaos Glace (Timeform hurdle rating: 123p) Chepstow, Saturday 6th April

An ordinary 0-120 handicap hurdle at Chepstow probably went under the radar more than most contests with the Grand National run only half an hour or so later, but the Chepstow race had a winner who looks one to keep firmly on side in better company after registering a ready success over his seventeen rivals. Never far away in a race where little more than half the field were ever competitive, Cilaos Glace went with enthusiasm under Leighton Aspell, jumped on three out and was in command at the last before running out the winner by three and three quarter lengths from Flight To Nowhere. Cilaos Glace was making a successful debut in handicap company after a wide-margin success in a very weak maiden hurdle at Fontwell in March under more testing conditions. Described by his stable as ‘a work in progress’, the well-made Cilaos Glace has the physique and pedigree of one who’ll prove better still over fences, sharing his sire Voix du Nord with last week’s impressive Bowl Chase winner Kemboy.
