My Timeform: Gold Stick a winner in waiting

We pick out three eye-catching runners from Newbury's meeting on Saturday, including a debut winner who looks set for even bigger things.

Gold Stick (Timeform rating 59p) – Newbury, Saturday 13th April

Gold Stick made a fair bit of appeal on paper – out of a smart winner up to 1m, wins including the 6f Cherry Hinton Stakes at two years, and the UAE 1000 Guineas – and was well found in the market for his debut at Newbury on Saturday. However, just like some of John Gosden’s newcomers can be, he was badly in need of the experience, diving left out of the stalls and racing off the pace, before running green mid-race. The penny did start to drop the more the race went on, though, seen making steady headway over two furlongs out without being given a hard time. Gold Stick rates the type to leave that initial performance well behind next time, and he seems sure to win a similar race sooner rather than later. John Gosden

Fox Chairman (Timeform rating 99p) – Newbury, Saturday 13th April

Andrew Balding and King Power Racing seem to have a very strong three-year-old contingent this season and Fox Chairman looked another potentially smart type when making a winning start at Newbury on Saturday. He cost a whopping 450,000 guineas as a yearling, and landed some nice bets to give Kingman yet another first-time-out winner. There was plenty to like about the manner of his success, too, slowly into stride but soon in a handy position, travelling notably strongly under Silvestre De Sousa and finding himself in the lead over two furlongs out. Fox Chairman then showed a smart turn of foot to quicken away from his rivals over a furlong out and kept on well in the closing stages. He lacks any fancy entries at this stage, but he looks ready for a step up in grade, something like the Heron Stakes at Sandown next month an ideal stepping stone to a possible tilt at a higher level. Andrew Balding

Indeed (Timeform rating 109) – Newbury, Saturday 13th April

Indeed won two of his four starts when trained in France by H-F. Devin, and finished a creditable fifth in listed company on his final start in 2018. However, he showed improved form on his British/stable debut after seven months off to finish a close second in a useful handicap at Newbury on Saturday, doing easily the best of those who had double-figure draws. Indeed also shaped like the best horse at the weights, racing prominently and travelling fluently, upsides the leaders over two furlongs out and briefly taking up the running and looking in control a furlong from home (traded at 1.35 in-running) before being headed in the final 100 yards. For all Indeed was sent off a big price (50/1), there was no element of luck about this performance, and he’ll be high on the shortlist for a similar event next time. Dominic Ffrench Davies
