My Timeform: Eye-catchers from the Goodwood Festival

Andrew Asquith picks out three eye-catchers from the Goodwood Festival last week.

Veracious (Timeform rating 112p) Goodwood, Thursday 2nd August

It is unlike Sir Michael Stoute to pitch one in at the highest level early in their career, so that says plenty about the regard Veracious must be held in. She looked an exciting prospect when winning a maiden on her final start in 2017, and proved herself a smart filly when finishing third in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot on her return. That run was even more distinguished as she had suffered a setback earlier in the year which had ruled her out of the Guineas. It was her exuberance rather than the longer trip that seemingly counted against her in the Nassau Stakes last time, still having every chance a furlong out until tiring in the last 50 yards. There is a race with her name on it if connections decide to go down slightly in grade, but she should also continue to give a good account at Group 1 level; a drop back to a mile will suit at this stage of her career. Sir Michael Stoute

Poetic Charm (Timeform rating 107) Goodwood, Friday 3rd August

Poetic Charm has made a good start to her career having won half of her starts to date, and she shaped better than the bare result for the second time this season when fifth at Goodwood last week. She did well to finish as close as she did all things considered, held up in the rear and not settling fully, and yet to be asked a question when bumped two furlongs out. That left her with plenty to do inside the final furlong, but she kept on well once gathering her balance and was only beaten one and a half lengths. She showed at Newmarket the time before that she is a potentially smart filly, and she is well worth another chance to confirm that promise next time. Charlie Appleby

Glenamoy Lad (Timeform rating 107+) Goodwood, Saturday 4th August

Glenamoy Lad proved most progressive switched to the Michael Wigham yard last season, winning three of his five starts, and judged on his recent reappearance, he should have even more to offer this year. He was asked an awful lot making his return in the Stewards’ Cup, but he didn’t look out of place, and he was arguably unlucky not to go close to winning. Glenamoy Lad was restrained early and settled in last place, noted travelling particularly well before suffering interference both times when he was trying to mount a challenge, staying on well once getting room to manoeuvre in the final furlong, though the damage had already been done. The improvement he showed as a three-year-old was just the beginning given the impression he made here, and he looks well up to winning handicaps from this sort of mark. Michael Wigham
