My Timeform: Eye-catchers from Sandown, Chepstow and Doncaster

ArticleImage

Ben Fearnley picks out three eye-catchers from the last week of racing, including one in the Welsh Grand National.

Amber Gambler (TF rating c112) - Sandown, Saturday January 6th

With neither of the market principals running their race, the 0-130 handicap chase at Sandown on Saturday took less winning than expected, but despite that it is still worth keeping an eye on fourth-placed Amber Gambler, who stepped up plenty on his comeback run nine weeks earlier, shaping well. He may well have gone close to pegging back the winner Chef d’Equipe had he not hit three out hard (rallied well run-in and nearest finish), and though he did plenty of winning last season he is clearly still on a workable mark based on this performance. Connections will have plenty of options with him now he is back in form (stays three miles) and he is one to consider for a similar event, also having the option to contest lesser races from his current mark. Ian Williams

Pobbles Bay (TF rating c144) - Chepstow, Saturday January 6th

The Welsh Grand National can usually be relied upon to provide a stiff test of stamina and this year’s rearranged renewal certainly didn’t disappoint on that front, a furious early gallop on the heavy ground making for a very demanding race. One who shaped well for a long way before his stamina gave way was Pobbles Bay, who was travelling as well as anything four fences from home (went 3/1 in-running on the Betfair Exchange) but ended up well beaten in seventh. That was only his fourth start in handicaps over fences and the feeling remains that Pobbles Bay has a good handicap in him from this sort of mark when the emphasis is less on stamina. Evan Williams

Oscar Rose (TF rating h113p) - Doncaster, Tuesday January 9th

Oscar Rose has now been beaten five times over hurdles (four times this season) but has had excuses on more than one of those occasions and is expected to make a breakthrough sooner rather than later from a mark that is clearly workable. Her first start in handicaps – at Cheltenham in December – didn’t go to plan, hampered and unseating her rider at the sixth, and though she was able to complete her race at Doncaster on Tuesday, she wasn’t seen to best effect again, hampered in rear at the fourth but making good headway in the straight to stay on for fourth. She’ll be suited by stepping up to beyond two and a half miles and will surely get off the mark over hurdles before long. Fergal O’Brien
