My Timeform: Al could be Trumped

Following a highly informative weekend of racing, we pick out three eye-catching runners who look set for a fruitful spring.

Ramses de Teillee (Timeform rating 152p) – Haydock, Saturday 16th February

Ramses de Teillee has become particularly adept at handling extreme tests of stamina, and he backed up his fine effort to finish second in the Welsh Grand National at Chepstow in December when filling the same place in the Grand National Trial at Haydock on Saturday, looking unlucky not to have won considering he made his effort so early in the race; he was produced to lead four out and looking in control in between the final two flights, before just getting collared close home by the winner’s strong, late surge. He’s a very likeable type who’s still on the upgrade and, as such, he looks one to be interested in when taking on marathon trips in the spring. He’s almost certain to get a run in this year’s Grand National should connections decide to take their chance this term (currently number 43 in the weights), and whilst the fact that he’s still only a seven-year-old may act as a deterrent considering their record in the race, it’s difficult to argue against Ramses de Teillee taking his chance at the moment. David Pipe

Getaway Trump (Timeform rating 139p) – Ascot, Saturday 16th February

Al Dancer’s excellent performance to win Saturday’s rescheduled Betfair Hurdle at Ascot rightly took all of the headlines, but it perhaps overshadowed the performance of fellow novice Getaway Trump a little, who produced a fine effort to finish fourth on handicap debut. The betting suggested that this race was likely to develop into a tale of two novices, and while Al Dancer was a decisive winner, Getaway Trump shaped particularly well in a race that wasn’t run to suit, settling in the rear and still having plenty to do when creeping closer out wide three out, before running on after the last. He will have derived plenty from that experience, and he remains one to be positive about whether that be in handicaps or back in graded company. Paul Nicholls

Champagne Classic (Timeform rating 145p) – Navan, Sunday 17th February

Though he’s yet to win in two starts over fences, Champagne Classic has made an encouraging start to his chasing career so far, twice placing in graded company having been dropped straight into the deep end. The form of Champagne Classic’s debut, when finishing third in a Grade 3 contest behind a particularly exciting young chaser, is looking stronger and stronger all of the time, and while he was narrowly unable to reverse the form with the second on that day, Chris’s Dream, at Navan on Sunday, he shouldn’t be marked down for that; jumping well and sticking to his task on the run-in, just failing to get up. He was a smart novice hurdler two seasons ago before missing last season through injury, and there looks plenty more to come from him yet over fences. He has plenty of options at the Cheltenham Festival, and looks one to remain interested in heading into the spring. Gordon Elliott
