Ratings Update: Reaction to Jonbon's Clarence House Chase success
Tony McFadden provides the Timeform ratings reaction to Jonbon's victory in the Clarence House Chase at Ascot on Saturday.
Jonbon (178 from 172) produced his best performance yet to comprehensively beat dual Champion Chase winner Energumene (169 from 177) by six and a half lengths in the Clarence House Chase at Ascot on Saturday and his new Timeform rating puts him in a similar bracket to a couple of illustrious chasers also trained by Nicky Henderson.
Jonbon is now the fourth highest-rated two-mile chaser trained by Henderson, behind only Altior (180), Shishkin (181) and Timeform's highest-rated jumps horse of the modern era, Sprinter Sacre (192). Jonbon is now rated higher than two of Henderson's Champion Chase winners in Remittance Man (173) and Finian's Rainbow (174), and is clearly the one to beat in the upcoming edition as he is rated 11 lb higher than second favourite Gaelic Warrior (167).
Jonbon's display was the second best on ratings by a Clarence House Chase winner since the race became a Grade 1 in 2008, with only Shishkin earning a higher figure for his thrilling defeat of Energumene three years ago. Saturday's display suggests that the 11-year-old Energumene may not quite be the same force who so memorably made Shishkin dig deep, but he was still four lengths clear of a high-class horse in Edwardstone (remains 164) in third, so Jonbon deserves plenty of credit for so convincingly brushing him aside in a good time. Jonbon's record now stands at 17 wins from 20 starts under Rules.
