Grand National Betting Odds Update: Farrell the flavour of the day
Tiger Roll is assured of his place as Grand National favourite and has been steady at around the 7/2 mark in recent days. However, the latest entry stage has had some repercussions on the betting, at least amongst those at bigger odds, with 12 withdrawals leading to both Walk In The Mill (25/1 from 33/1) and Joe Farrell (33/1 from 50/1) contracting in price on Monday. The former is now guaranteed a place in the field as he attempts to add to his Becher Chase win at the track in December, while last year’s Scottish Grand National winner Joe Farrell now needs only two to come out to get a run.
Others who have attracted support include two stablemates of Tiger Roll, namely Jury Duty, who is now 20/1 from 25/1, and A Toi Phil, who has been supported at huge odds (66/1 from 100/1). Meanwhile, Pleasant Company was beaten just a head by Tiger Roll 12 months ago and – now meeting that rival on 4 lb better terms – it would be no surprise if punters latch on to him in the build-up to Saturday, with his price already having been clipped into 18/1 from 20/1.
Looking closer to hand, the Aintree Hurdle is the feature race on the opening day of the meeting, and this year’s renewal looks potentially as good as any in recent memory, with a strong contingent set to come over from Ireland. Willie Mullins alone could field a trio contenders – namely Benie des Dieux, Faugheen and Melon – while Gordon Elliott can choose from Apple’s Jade and Samcro.
However, it is the Nicky Henderson-trained Buveur d’Air who heads the market at the time of writing, as he attempts to repeat his 2017 win in the race. He has been well backed in recent days, too, now as short as 11/10 having been available at 5/2 when the betting opened, and the vibes suggest that he is fully recovered from the fall he suffered when bidding for a third consecutive success in the Champion Hurdle.
Other market movers for Thursday’s action include Kemboy, who is now a general 11/4-shot (from 4/1) for the Betway Bowl, in which he could meet the third and fifth from the Gold Cup, namely Bristol de Mai and Clan des Obeaux. Meanwhile, Road To Rome is a solid favourite for the Foxhunters’ Chase, well-backed at 4/1 with the shorter trip than when fourth in the equivalent race at Cheltenham likely to be in his favour.
The JLT Chase takes centre stage on Friday, with a competitive renewal in prospect in the absence of Altior. The Paul Nicholls-trained Cyrname is also said to be an unlikely runner, but his stablemate Politologue is still a worthy favourite as he attempts to repeat his success 12 months ago. The money has certainly come for him in recent days – he is as short as 15/8 in a place – and he looks sure to take plenty of beating, while Rene’s Girl has also been backed at huge odds in a race that has the potential to cut up, now a general 25/1-shot from as big as 66/1.
There are four Grade 1 races in total on Ladies Day, including the Top Novices’ Hurdle, for which Itchy Feet (4/1 from 5/1) now heads the market as he attempts to provide trainer Olly Murphy with a first Grade 1 success. Meanwhile, the Topham is the big betting heat on the afternoon, and though Janika is favourite at 8/1, it is Cadmium who ante-post punters have wanted to be with, backing him into 16/1 from 20/1 since the entries came out on Saturday.
