Grey much improved back from a wind op/10 months off when running his rivals ragged in Cheltenham Grade 3 handicap in December, travelling and jumping well and coming clear with plenty in hand. Yard has had a fantastic season and won this with a 100/1-stunner in 2009. Very much one to consider.

Plenty of good runs over fences before putting it all together on his return in hot Leopardstown handicap at Christmas (Enjoy d'Allen third). Fancied for the Kim Muir at Cheltenham off this mark but a mistake 4 out did for him and he wasn't given a hard time. Interesting.

Much improved over marathon trips the last twice, winning the Classic Chase at Warwick (beat a subsequent Cheltenham Festival runner-up) before chasing home Scottish National winner Win My Wings in the Eider at Newcastle. Lots to like on that form and a big player having crept in off a low weight.

Better than ever this term, relishing the emphasis on stamina as he went clear from Fiddlerontheroof in the mud at Ascot 7 weeks ago. Same mark here (rider unable to use his 5 lb claim), and he should be suited by this test. Could ruffle a few feathers.

Once you’ve made your selection be aware that any delays in backing it may lead the odds to shorten or, more fortuitously – the odds may lengthen, giving you greater value.

If you’re backing a horse ante-post, then you may find that the odds in the market are largely static but as the race looms, the odds will begin to change frequently.

We only list odds from trusted and leading bookmaker partners who will take your bets on the Grand National and are easy to use.

When looking at Grand National odds, it is important not to immediately be drawn to the shortest odds runner in the market – whilst it might be favourite, the odds might not reflect its actual chance to win the race.

It is important to survey the field, look at each runner and look out for signs like recent form, trainer form, jockey form and previous record on course.

You can check out our Grand National runner page for a horse by horse comment or, if you just don’t have the time to study the form then try our Grand National Tip Generator.

The great appeal for many people betting on the Grand National is to pick a long-shot winner, or a great each-way shout – who knows, maybe we’ll have another 100/1 winner this year, like Mon Mome in 2009.

If you’re betting for the first time, or in the market for a new bookmaker, make sure you check out our Grand National free bets page.
