JCB TRIUMPH HURDLE (Grade 1) (1) |
Distance: 2m 179y (New) |
Prize: £78,332 Age: 4yo Race Type: Hurdle | Going: Gd/Sft |
The most extreme of several examples during the week of the way in which Willie Mullins dominates jump racing, his stable supplying 7 of the 15 runners, including 5 of the first 6 in the market, the finish involving 4 of those 5, by contrast the race also laying bare the abject state of the British challenge, just 3 runners for the home team, all at long odds; unusually, perhaps uniquely for a Grade 1, the majority of the field were maidens - 8 of the 15 - while the first 4 home were French bred and the first 3 fillies, Lossiemouth just the second of her sex to win since 2000, following Burning Victory in 2020; that one's subsequent success in the Solerina Hurdle is one of just a handful of victories over hurdles for winners of the Triumph in the last decade, illustrating the struggle to bridge the gap to top open company, though 2 winners in that time have been notable chasers, Tiger Roll and Defi du Seuil; on a positive note, physically this was a good line-up, plenty with the look of horses that should train on, not least the winner; the race was started at the second attempt, after the field was far too keen and broke the tape, Jupiter du Gite very nearly bolting, several of the others clearly lit up, that carrying over to the race once it started, the headstrong leader ignored and the pace overall on the steady side, the field still well grouped 2 out.
