UNIBET CHAMPION HURDLE CHALLENGE TROPHY (Grade 1) (1) |
Distance: 2m 87y (Old) |
Prize: £253,215 Age: 4yo+ Race Type: Hurdle | Going: Soft |
Not since the days of Istabraq has the Champion Hurdle revolved around one horse to the extent that this season's did, Constitution Hill established after just 5 races as potentially the greatest hurdler of all time, a most impressive winner of both the Grade 1 2m hurdles run in Britain earlier in the campaign; Epatante and Honeysuckle, Champion Hurdle winners in the last 3 seasons, tackled the Mares' Hurdle this time, which left just 6 rivals for Constitution Hill, the smallest field since 1974, a smaller one not seen since 1941, Constitution Hill at 11/4-on the shortest-priced winner in the history of the race, Sir Ken having been sent off at 5/2-on when gaining his second win in 1953; the margin of victory was the third widest this century, only the ill-fated Espoir d'Allen and Rooster Booster having scored by further, the pace, which was no more than fair until the fifth, and his rider's desire to do as little as was required the only things preventing Constitution Hill from winning by quite a bit further, his performance still one of the very best in the race's long history, his slick jumping, cruising speed and turn of foot making him just about the perfect hurdler.
