Just 6 runners, almost unbelievably, for the great traditional race of the Festival, back with amateurs in the saddle after last season's enforced switch to professional riders, when the leading Gold Cup contender Galvin put up one of the best performances in the race, perhaps not coincidentally, though this running featured a pair that had already run to a level good enough to win an average renewal, and with the less exposed of the 2 winning by the margin he did, he probably matched what Galvin achieved, though the small field and a relatively steady pace, with nothing else giving its running behind the second, means there isn't a lot of substance to the form.
