Significant rain, which began in mid-morning and continued throughout the day, made for conditions in marked contrast to the previous day, the rain not forecast, to the extent that the Clerk of the Course had watered parts of the track overnight, the ground soft by the time of this opener, as last season a historically small field lining up, just 3 British stables with a runner, one of those a maiden sent off at 66/1, 2 of the Irish-trained runners at even longer odds, though those at the head of the market set a good standard, the first 3 in the betting unbeaten, none of the field having run more than 3 times over hurdles; Sir Gerhard was following the same owner's Envoi Allen in adding this race to a win in the Champion Bumper, the irony here that the winner had been trained by Gordon Elliott, responsible for the runner-up, until his ban for bringing racing into disrepute last March; the pace was steady early, and several were very keen as a result, the winner among them.
