Arkle Challenge Trophy 2020 Result

14:10 Tuesday 10 March 2020

Distance: 1m 7f 199y (Old)
Prize: £98,472 Age: 5yo+ Race Type: Chase Going: Soft

A deep field assembled for the Arkle, winners of the 3 pre-Cheltenham Grade 1 novice chases at this trip lining up, together with the runners-up from the 2 of those held in Ireland - one of those horses himself already a Grade 1 winner over further - along with a trio of Grade 2 winners plus a further 2 unbeaten chasers; in the event the race was a bit of an anti-climax, Notebook and Cash Back charging the tape at the first attempt, both of them taking a little while to pull up and get back to the start before not running their race, plenty of incident at the fourth last and only a pair ending up giving their running, the result of greater relevance in historical rather than form terms - the winner the first mare to land this in 40 years; that the first 2 are both fully proven over 2½m was probably an advantage given how things panned out, the pace unsurprisingly a good one from the outset, even if those that remained were still closely bunched after 3 out.

All 11 ran. Fences: 13.
