Run over the same course and distance as the Cheltenham Gold Cup, it was inaugurated in 1904. It is open to horses aged five years and older.
Furthermore, for a horse to be eligible for the race, it must have done one of the following; finished first or second twice in hunter chases, won two open point-to-point races or won one open point-to-point race and finished second or first in a hunter chase.
Since 1946 no horse has won it more than twice, but a total of nine horses have done the double, the most recent being Pacha Du Polder (2017 and 2018). He was retired in 2019 after an unsuccessful attempt to become the first horse to win the race three times; the race was won by the Philip Rowley-trained Hazel Hill, who had been in good form in point to points and hunter chases earlier in the season.
The jockey with the most victories in this race is the now retired Colman Sweeney.
Honours for the top trainer are tied between Richard Barber and Paul Nicholls .
