Smart chaser when at his peak and showed he retains plenty of his old spark when comfortably scoring at Haydock last month. Runner-up turned out quickly next time, but likely to be back on song.

No impact in a hunter at Down Royal on Boxing Day and pulled up in a point since, so very hard to make any sort of case for in a race this competitive.

Relatively unexposed and continued his progress when forging clear in a competitive hunter at Naas last time. Has a standout profile and boasts leading claims for top stable.

Made a winning stable/hunter debut when scoring convincingly at this track last May and showed plenty of that ability remains when runner-up at Taunton in January. Not dismissed.

Highly impressive winner of the Punchestown Champion Hunter 10 months ago and readily scored on his return in points. Has shaped well in this before, so expect a big run.

Placed in a point recently but enthusiasm looked to be waning when last seen under Rules, so easy to dismiss now firmly into the twilight of his career.

Top-notch chaser in his prime and, while he lost the plot under Rules, his recent successes in points suggest there's still a bit of life in him. This scenario might take him out of his comfort zone.

Demonstrated fairly useful form when landing a couple of hunters in 2018 and made a successful return from a lengthy absence back in points in February. Looks a bit out of his depth, though.

Made a winning return at Down Royal before a creditable fifth to Billaway at Naas last time. Not ideally placed that day and strong pace should suit, so not one to write off.

One-time very classy chaser who has found a new lease of life in hunters, scoring at Warwick before seeing off Hazel Hill at Wetherby last month. Big player with O'Connor's assistance a huge bonus.

Analyst's Verdict

BILLAWAY has a different profile to the bulk of his rivals, lightly raced and firmly on the up. He can improve further to account for the likes of Minella Rocco and last year's winner Hazel Hill, the pair having pulled a long way clear as they fought out the finish at Wetherby earlier in the year. Caid du Berlais also warrants a mention.

Run over the same course and distance as the Cheltenham Gold Cup, it was inaugurated in 1904. It is open to horses aged five years and older.

Furthermore, for a horse to be eligible for the race, it must have done one of the following; finished first or second twice in hunter chases, won two open point-to-point races or won one open point-to-point race and finished second or first in a hunter chase.

Since 1946 no horse has won it more than twice, but a total of nine horses have done the double, the most recent being Pacha Du Polder (2017 and 2018). He was retired in 2019 after an unsuccessful attempt to become the first horse to win the race three times; the race was won by the Philip Rowley-trained Hazel Hill, who had been in good form in point to points and hunter chases earlier in the season.

The jockey with the most victories in this race is the now retired Colman Sweeney.

Honours for the top trainer are tied between Richard Barber and Paul Nicholls .
