Cheltenham Festival Betting Update: Altior and Native River return
Posted in: Cheltenham Festival News
There was a fair bit of market action after Saturday’s racing at Newbury and Warwick. Supreme/Arkle winner Altior was making his seasonal return in the Game Spirit at Newbury, and he looked as good as ever, beating Tingle Creek winner Politologue comfortably. He tightened up at the top of the betting for the Champion Chase on the back of that, and with plenty in hand over second favourite Min on ratings, he should take all the beating.
Native River shortened up in the betting for the Gold Cup following his win in the Denman Chase. Like Altior, he was returning from an absence and he was impressive, winning by 12 lengths. He’s now a general second/third favourite for the Gold Cup along with last year’s winner Sizing John, that pair both behind 3/1 favourite Might Bite.
There was market movement for the Cheltenham Festival opener, too, the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle, following the victory of Kalashnikov in the Betfair Hurdle. He won a very deep renewal of the race and is deservedly now around an 8/1 chance for the Supreme, a race his trainer has mentioned as his most likely target.

The main Festival mover at Warwick was Saint Calvados, winner of the Grade 2 Kingmaker Chase. He was very impressive, winning by 22 lengths, and looks the leading British Arkle contender, now around 8/1 for the Grade 1 novice at Cheltenham. His form isn’t as strong as that of Footpad, but he’s beaten everything in front of him in impressive style and could do even better yet.
