A maiden all about Kirklees, not only in the race itself, in which he readily made all, looking a good prospect, but in the market as well, heavily bet at odds on despite the better form of Pires, that one seeming unsuited to the track. KIRKLEES (IRE) looked even more promising than he had at Thirsk, much sharper about his job and always well in control, handling the track better than Pires, though even in the straight he was going clear from him all the time until eased for the last 100 yds, value an extra 3l; he'll go on and win more races. PIRES is perhaps slightly flattered by his fourth in the Chesham at 33/1, and seems to be quirky, or at least lazy, but, a big, long-striding sort, it may be no coincidence that his standout run has been the once he's faced a galloping course, struggling all the more with this track than Brighton, barely ever on the bridle. CENTENARY (IRE) hadn't shaped so well as the winner at Thirsk when both were making their debut but didn't improve at all himself, despite looking less green. BOLLIN FREDDIE looks more a longer-term prospect, but less firm ground than he's had so far may help, as he shows a round action.
