An ordinary renewal of Italy's top 2-y-o race, and in the absence of any German colts, who'd won the last 2 runnings, it was back to a British/Irish domination, Mark Johnston winning it for the third time after Lend A Hand (1997) and Pearl of Love (2003). KIRKLEES (IRE) had been running consistently in defeat in pattern company in Britain and found this an easier task, showing a little improvement, making much of the running and rallying to come out narrowly on top. STROBILUS, on the face of it, was taking a big step up in class just 9 days after his convincing win under top weight in nursery company, but it didn't require much more from him form-wise to go close here, making the early running and leading again in the closing stages until headed on the line. CHINESE WHISPER (IRE) ran his best race returned to 1m, prominent throughout and keeping on; by Montjeu out of a smart French 1m/10f winner, he'll stay further still.
