As competitive a renewal as the numbers suggest, this just the second double-figure field since the race became a Group 1 in 1985, largely thanks to 6 British-trained runners (including the next 4 home behind the winner) and 3 from Italy; the Poule d'Essai des Poulains form was turned upside-down, while Tamayuz enjoyed a positive ride from Davy Bonilla, he and trainer Freddie Head winning their second Group 1 in 3 days after Marchand d'Or's July Cup success. TAMAYUZ only has defeat in the Poule d'Essai des Poulains (behind 3 of these rivals), when things didn't go his way, to spoil an otherwise unblemished record, and given a 2-month break since then, resumed his progress; ridden more prominently and enjoying the run of things as a result, he led over 2f out on the rail when the pacemakers gave way and struck for home shortly afterwards, always keeping on too strongly for his pursuers. RAVEN'S PASS (USA) (blanketed for stalls entry) failed to match his high-class effort in the St James's Palace, though that shouldn't be held against him too much as he ended up with plenty to do in relation to the more prominently-ridden winner, dropped out and enjoying a clear run up the rail in the straight but only able to stay on to take second close home; he's set for another crack at Henrythenavigator in the Sussex Stakes where he'd benefit from being ridden nearer the pace. RIO DE LA PLATA (USA) ran creditably back in trip, and while the Derby proved too far, shaped as though in need of a bit further than 1m now, just able to keep on at one pace from mid-division. CAT JUNIOR (USA) (blanketed for stalls entry), whilst not quite matching his St James's Palace effort, confirmed himself a smart colt on just his fourth start and won't need his sights lowering much to win a good race; he shaped like the second-best horse for much of the straight, always prominent and sent in pursuit of the eventual winner from over 2f out, those efforts telling when he was run out of the places only close home. KANDAHAR RUN (blanketed for stalls entry) ran his best race yet, back at 1m for the first time since last year, in the first half-dozen throughout and briefly threatening to finish a bit closer than he eventually did. WINKER WATSON faced no easy task on his first start for exactly a year and in the circumstances wasn't entirely discredited (also reportedly lost a shoe), held up and just able to run on at one pace after making a bit of progress early in the straight; unbeaten in 3 starts year, he'd been out of action since the July Stakes, soft ground ruling him out of last summer's Prix Morny and then various problems preventing him running again at 2 and delaying his return this year; he's bred to prove best at up to 1m. FALCO (USA) is in danger of falling from prominence just as swiftly as he'd risen in the Poulains, and, equipped with a pacemaker here after connections felt he'd done too much at Ascot, seemingly had no excuses, ridden prominently and threatening only briefly around 2f out. LEGISLATION can only hope for a pacemaking role at this level and was done with soon after the home turn.
