The official was only Good but the times suggest it was firmer, though a strong wind which was largely behind them in the straight may have had an effect.

A typical back-end Group race in that ability is almost secondary behind well-being at this stage, highlighted by the outcome with so few on song, the winner amongst the outsiders and few ever getting competitive, though tactics also played some part, as it paid to be handy. STEELE TANGO (USA) could express himself all the more in the face of an easier assignment than he has normally been set this year, raising his game as required, probably showing the benefit of a mid-season break too, finding plenty to fend off Glass Harmonium as they forged ahead late on; he has form at 12f, but his wins have come up to this trip. GLASS HARMONIUM (IRE) did more to corroborate that he's as good as he looked at Royal Ascot, though the impression was he could have won had he really wanted, sharper for Newbury, coping better with the trip, and nosing ahead 100 yds out, but in the grand scheme of things he's still a relative novice and it may be that 2010 is his coming of age, particularly with his stamina as yet unexploited. PALAVICINI (USA) will hopefully come back more mature as a 4-y-o as even now he's still not the fully proficient, inclined to pull, which sometimes restricts his finishing effort like here, running well all the same, if not all he could achieve if everything clicks. CHARLIE FARNSBARNS (IRE) seems to come good at this time of year and would have gone closer to repeating his 2008 win with a clearer passage, hemmed in for a while, not that he'd have confirmed placings with Glass Harmonium from Newbury. RIO DE LA PLATA (USA)'s comments from the Joel Stakes regards his pretensions for next season still stand, as his problems perhaps caught up with him just a fortnight on, more to it than lack of stamina, briefly looking a threat from off the pace but not moving right by the end. STOTSFOLD had built up a sequence of solid performances including ventures to France and America, so it's possible and excusable that this was one run too many for the year, looking flat even before snatched up. RUSSIAN SAGE (SAF) has strutted his stuff in several countries but not so far in Britain, more zip about him this time, soon across and prominent, but finding little. BALCARCE NOV (ARG)'s best handicap form in Britain is verging on Group standard but his first attempt came to little. BUSHMAN was dropped out, part of the fact the race didn't get to the bottom of him.SUPASEUS presumably wasn't over his big effort in the Cambridgeshire. BALLINTENI was out of his depth. HEBRIDEAN (IRE) didn't appear fully wound up for his belated Flat return, added to which this test wouldn't have been near enough for him, successful at 12f for Aidan O'Brien last year, though he looked as much about speed as stamina as a hurdler for Paul Nicholls.
